It's a safe bet that Federal Realty Investment Trust makes a federal case of shopping centers. Federal Realty owns or has majority interest in about 100 retail properties with more than 24 million sq. ft. of leasable space, including community and neighborhood shopping centers and mixed-use complexes. Its key properties are located primarily in major coastal markets from Washington, DC to Boston as well as San Francisco and Los Angeles, and properties in Florida, Illinois and Michigan. One of the oldest publicly traded REITs in the US, Federal Realty was founded in 1962.
