The Chaplain Fellow is a supported, training yearlong position of professional spiritual care for employees with limited clinical / pediatric hospital spiritual care experience and who are graduates from Clinical Pastoral Education and master's program. As this is a full-time benefited employee position at Stanford Children's Health (SCH), candidates will need to apply to SCH's online portal and follow the standard processes for SCH employee screening and onboarding if accepted.

Two days per week (40% of time) will be protected non-clinical time. One day is set aside for the Chaplain Fellow's required participation in the Post Residency Fellowship Program at SMCH. In this Fellowship Program, the Fellow will be supervised by the Clinical Mentor/Lead Chaplain. One day will also be set aside for research and integration of clinical practice, and other asynchronous learning and education.

Essential Functions

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Service Standards of the Hospital(s).

ALL CLINICAL DUTIES ARE PERFORMED UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF AN EXPERIENCED APC BOARD CERTIFIED CHAPLAIN, SCH CLINICAL MENTOR.

  • At least 40% of the fellow's time is protected non-clinical, non-patient facing time to be spent engaged in educational professional development opportunities including reflection, exploration, trainings, research, and clinical consultation. This will include working with Mentor/ Lead Chaplain towards Board Certification application.
  • Participates in a minimum of weekly individual clinical supervision 1:1 with their SCH Clinical Mentor. Fellows have access to their Clinical Mentor for daily ad hoc consultative needs.
  • Participates in didactic seminars- and other programs as administered by the Clinical Mentor/Lead Chaplain.
  • Receives training on how to collaborate with interdisciplinary health care teams to devise, develop, and implement spiritual assessments and care plans into the overall plan of care.
  • Develops increasing mastery of completion of spiritual assessments of patients/families to evaluate emotional, relational, cultural, spiritual, and religious strengths and needs by applying spiritual care theories of practice, social / family dynamic theories and age-appropriate competencies.
  • Gains knowledge on the development and implementation of patient/family assessments and care plans.
  • Learns how to prepare and maintain electronic medical records in accordance with SCH Spiritual Care Services department and/or health system policies. Provides written and oral reports and hand-offs in accordance with department processes and standards.
  • Under the guidance of Fellow's SCH Clinical Mentor, provides supportive spiritual counseling, grief counseling, and spiritual/ religious therapeutic interventions to assist patients and families in coping with illness, processing medical information and changes in the level of functioning and care needs, and as appropriate, in facing end of life. Provides resources, as available, to connect patients and families to their assessed and requested faith/ religious community.
  • Under the guidance of the Fellow's SCH Clinical Mentor, gains familiarity with child abuse reporting laws, the requirements of a chaplain as mandated reporter, and in working with LPCH SCAN team and social workers, who are the primary clinical professional for addressing such concerns.
  • Opportunity for individualized focus on or engagement in targeted patient care improvement initiatives.
  • Provides a clinical case presentation/Capstone project to SCH spiritual care department at the conclusion of the fellowship.
Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Master's degree in Spirituality, Religious Studies, Divinity or from an accredited graduate program or the equivalent, and at least 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education at an APCE accredited program.

  • Ability to gather data needed to assess spiritual care needs of patients and families.
  • Evolving ability to manage an increasingly complex caseload, maintain confidentiality of information, and determine an effective course of action in emergencies and other clinically acute situations.
  • Evolving ability to provide clear, concise documentation and succinct case presentation for discussion.
  • Developing knowledge and ability to apply effective assessment, counseling techniques, sourcing and resourcing faith-specific requests and needs for a culturally and religiously diverse setting, and equitable distribution of resources.
  • Developing knowledge of medical center resources to support patient/family cultural, spiritual, and religious needs.
  • Evolving ability to skillfully advocate on behalf of patient/family spiritual and existential needs.
  • Development of knowledge of and sensitivity to the significance of cultural considerations of LPCH's patient population.
  • Development of knowledge in the application of interventions founded in theories and practices of spiritual care. Develop knowledge of interventions based in trauma informed, family centered, and strengths-based philosophies and how to collaborate effectively with social work team members who are primarily tasked with psychosocial assessments and interventions.

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.

Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $52,000.00 to $52,000.00
