Job Summary

This position is a part of The Orthopaedic Surgery's Research Program Management Office (RPMO). The primary responsibility is financial and grants management functions for a portfolio of projects prior to the award of funding. The Pre-Award Specialist serves as a lead point of contact and manages the proposal process in collaboration with Orthopaedic faculty and the UCSF centralized pre-award team to submit federal and non-federal, prime and subrecipient proposals. The Pre-Award Specialist applies professional knowledge for reviewing project budgets, understanding submission guidelines, identifying areas of potential concern or conflict with terms and conditions, and with some funders, and the submission of proposals. This role partners with a Post-Award Analyst, who focuses on the management of funds received, monitoring spending and compliance to terms and conditions and post-award close and financial reporting. This position also serve in key departmental functions for training and orienting new staff. May involve activities associated with analyzing research funding trends and sources, forecasting, planning, and managing of research portfolios by performing some or all of the following: coordinating and identifying and developing and/or presenting proposals.

Department Description

The Orthopaedic Surgery Research Program Management Office (RPMO) is lead by the Vice Chair of Research and managed by the Director of Research Administration and Operations to provide strategic infrastructure and administrative support for the department of Orthopedic Surgery's activity in Basic Science, Clinical, and Translational Research.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is internationally recognized and provide expert treatment for all aspects of musculoskeletal injuries including inpatient and outpatient surgical care, rehabilitation, and orthotics and prosthetics. Our physicians have specific training and experience in a broad range of orthopaedic specialties at multiple campuses (UC, Mt. Zion, MB, SFGH, and VAMC).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and minimum of 3 years of experience/ or equivalent experience / training
  • Thorough understanding of research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc
  • Ability to manage significant volume of transactions
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports
  • Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization and communication skills; and a customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas
  • Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research Administration Certification
  • Certified Research Administration (CRA)
  • Certified Pre-Award Research Administration (CPRA)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective grant funding processes, procedures and techniques
  • Strong writing skills in a variety of styles to draft persuasive text for a variety of audiences while ensuring adherence to funding sponsors guidelines.
  • Maintains high level knowledge of some areas of biomedical research and research development methods; Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration
