Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the ALS-U (Advance Light Source Upgrade) is seeking a Mechanical Technician, focusing on Cryogenic and vacuum technology, who will perform routine technical support in the field of mechanical technology by representing the engineering division while supporting the ALS-U project. Under direct supervision from the team lead or supervisor, work leads, or fellow teammates, follow prescribed work methods or explicit instructions, perform generally standardized assignments that require the application of basic knowledge of mechanical and electro-mechanical theory and practices.

What You Will Do:

  • You will perform various technical tasks as a Mechanical Technician familiar with beamlines and particle accelerators. These tasks will involve working in scientific lab and machine shop environments, as needed, to modify, build, install, or maintain the equipment, instrumentation, and components all needed to ensure the new ALS Accelerator is fully operational.
  • Work with cryogenic, optical, and vacuum systems needed for beamline and accelerator operation
  • Experience maintaining and installing vacuum systems
  • Learn to utilize a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic materials, formulations and processes.
  • Must be able to follow detailed instructions from teammates and/or written procedures.
  • Maintain best safety practices while performing daily tasks to ensure personal safety and the safety of teammates and bystanders.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Operate calculators to perform calculations or measurements necessary to accomplish assignments.
  • Operate personal computers or computer terminals to access and/or document information on parts, components and materials or specifications.

What is Required:

  • Minimum of 1 to 2 years of general hand tool and/or machine shop knowledge or related experience
  • Background in basic mechanical and/or electromechanical technology with the ability to successfully accomplish assignments.
  • Technical knowledge and skills in any of the following areas: fabrication, assembling, machining, installing, set up, operating, testing, inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and processes and procedures.
  • Some knowledge in the use of standard hand, power, and machine tools.

Desired Qualifications:

  • AA degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or the equivalent in industry or military training.
  • Knowledge to interpret elementary engineering drawings, sketches, parts lists, and component layout and assembly diagrams.
  • Competency in identifying mechanical parts and components including sizes, ratings, tolerances, finishes, materials, and appropriate applications.
  • Valid California Driver's License.

Salary:

The hourly range for the 706.1 (Level 1) position is $27.87-$40.39. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

The hourly range for the 706.2 (Level 2) position is $33.42-$48.47. The hourly rate for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
