The Institute for Business and Social Impact (IBSI) was launched in November 2013 at the Haas School of Business to train and empower leaders to address society's most pressing challenges. Responsibilities

Under the current faculty leadership, IBSI has expanded the research and innovation content of its engagements and strengthened relationships with faculty by leveraging and showcasing faculty research as well as creating new opportunities to support their ongoing work. The Research Director is essential for executing these expanded goals as well as advancing the IBSI's academic and research objectives:

  • Enhancing the IBSI 's Research Profile: The Research Director will expand IBSI's research efforts by guiding and promoting research activities. This can attract funding, partnerships, and top talent.
  • Promoting Interdisciplinary Research: The Research Director will foster collaboration between various faculties and departments, enabling interdisciplinary research projects to have a wider impact.
  • Facilitating Research Opportunities and Funding for Faculty: The Research Director will provide faculty with opportunities to engage in research activities and research funding.
  • Advancing Knowledge: The Research Director will facilitate the dissemination of research findings, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in various fields and disciplines.

The following are some specific responsibilities:

  • Directs and administers multiple research programs with responsibility for all research, administrative, and programmatic activities. Manages IBSI/LIFT/SFS-Lab grants, including leading proposal development and providing intellectual leadership and oversight for funded activities.
  • Lead, grow and manage multi-million dollar, multiparty, and multi-year grants with multiple stakeholders (faculty, researchers, funders, campus administration, etc.).
  • Works closely with faculty on interdisciplinary research projects that demonstrate the effectiveness of new measurement tools and/or research methods (includes designing studies, overseeing field data collection, developing statistical models, conducting analyses, and publishing findings). Works with external experts, scholars, and others as needed to integrate best practices for research, impact evaluation, and other approaches for high profile research.
  • Leads engagements and partnerships with research partners (industry partners, policy makers, and multilateral) to create new opportunities for research/academic collaborations.
  • Identifies and pursues high-yield funding opportunities that advance IBSI/LIFT/SFS-Lab's research agenda. Leads and cultivates strong networks of donors and partners that support IBSI's research agendas.
  • Provides intellectual leadership and works closely with faculty to identify and develop large or complex research grant program(s)/initiative(s). In particular, leads collaborations with faculty to leverage their research activities and explore new fundraising opportunities.
  • Advises faculty and researchers on solutions to issues that arise involving data collection and analysis, study subjects, funders, impact evaluation, and reporting requirements.
  • Collaborates with Faculty Director and Executive Director to lead the response to relevant calls for proposals, coordinating with the UC Sponsored Project Office (SPO) as needed.
  • Leads research collaborations across campus. IBSI leverages strong ties across several departments (e.g., Department of Economics, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, School of Law, Goldman School of Public Policy, School of Information, School of Engineering, etc.) to promote cross-disciplinary research, innovation, and ideas.
  • Leads and manages collaborations with other prominent research initiatives on campus including Center for Effective Global Actions, Blum Center for Developing Economies, Opportunity Lab, etc. as well as collaborations and partnership with other external research networks: Innovation Poverty Actions (IPA), The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), etc.
  • Cultivates and maintains strong networks of donors, partners, and end-users that support IBSI's mission and vision. Develops and maintains networks of partners in IBSI research interest areas such as World Bank, InterAmerican Development Bank, International Finance Corporations, Gates Foundation, Robert Woods Johnson Foundation, local government agencies, etc.
  • Represents IBSI with other organizations within the academic, business and policy community as well as community stakeholders sharing common objectives.
  • For LIFT and SFS-Labs: Oversees finance and human resources operations for the two labs, including budgeting, financial management, research conference execution, and knowledge management.
  • Leads the preparation of annual reports and other reporting as required by awards in collaboration with award managers. Leads and works closely with University Development and Alumni Relations (DAR), Industry Alliance Office, and Sponsored Project Office (SPO) to improve and expand partnerships and collaboration.
  • Assesses the programs' effectiveness, and recommends changes to program content, policies and procedures accordingly.
  • Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short- and long-term planning. Contributes to high-level decision-making at IBSI by regularly engaging with the Faculty Director, Executive Director, and IBSI's initiative directors.
  • Leads innovation effort for research programs by tracking cutting edge policy trends and source ideas for new research and capacity building opportunities from a global network of faculty, collaborators, staff, and partners.
  • Actively reviews the state of the literature and is familiar with the knowledge frontier that is relevant to IBSI's research agendas, including methodological work.

Required Qualifications

  • In-depth academic background and experience in selected area of research including record of publications in related field(s).
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced skills analyzing information, problems, situations, policies, or procedures to define the problem, need or objective.
  • Proven ability to formulate solutions, new program development, alternative choices, and implications for implementation.
  • Ability to collaborate and develop rigorous and methodologically sound research projects, including in the design and set up of large-scale field experiments.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers, managers, and teams.
  • Advanced program planning and management of projects.
  • Practical knowledge of aligning diverse faculty research interests with the needs of donors.
  • Experience and familiarity with large corporate and private foundations; track record of successful grant wins.
  • Experience and demonstrated success with technical grant writing for behavioral and/or field research projects.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to execute work independently.
  • Ability to exercise discretion when handling sensitive information and maintain confidentiality where required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating a desire to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging to establish and maintain positive & professional working relationships with colleagues, students and team members.

Education/Training:

  • Ph.D. or Masters in Economics, Public Policy, or another quantitative social science discipline plus ten years of relevant experience and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and competency working with decision-makers in multilateral, government, and/or large research institutions.
  • Knowledge and experience shepherding a grant proposal through UC Berkeley's grant approval process (Special Projects Office).
  • Knowledge of academic literature of one or more of these fields: gender issues, youth, sustainability, entrepreneurship, financial inclusion.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, researchers, staff, and students.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $150,000.00 - $180,000.00.
