Departmental Overview

The Division of Student Affairs advances the learning and personal growth of students by providing leadership, services, and opportunities that enable students to succeed in and contribute to a diverse and global society. Student Affairs Information Technologies (SAIT), a department within the Division, provides and supports the technology and computing services for the Division. SAIT supports many of the services provided to students, the Division of Student Affairs, and the university community. SAIT consists of 30+ full-time career staff and over 70+ student part-time staff. The department is organized into 3 teams: Student Technologies, Strategic Initiatives, Development & Operations.

The Operations team within Student Affairs IT is responsible for the administration of the infrastructure and systems that support the business needs of the Division of Student Affairs, including both test and production environments. This team is responsible for Microsoft Windows server administration, web systems administration, file server storage administration, database administration, server security, system backups, and monitoring of services, all deployed within a VMWare environment. Responsibilities also include Azure administration, Active Directory management, firewall configuration, and endpoint management of mobile devices.

The primary responsibility of this position involves planning, designing, building, testing, implementing, and maintaining systems and applications to ensure the functionality, high-availability, integrity, reliability and security of data and on-prem systems, as well as cloud-based services and systems. This position will participate in the migration of on-premise environments into a cloud environment as part of a larger DevOps team, and will oversee the activity of the Endpoint Engineering student team.

Responsibilities

System Administration:

  • Supports projects or services of moderately complex scope involving aspects of enterprise class system administration including server operating systems, databases, networking, firewalls, and cloud technologies. Provides operational support, maintenance and performance tuning of Test, QA and Production environments. Applies patches, implements system enhancements and updates to improve security, performance and reliability. Builds, maintains and enhances Microsoft Windows Server operating systems, including AD, GPOs, SQL Server and IIS within VMware server environment. Writes and executes scripts to support system management, task automation, log analysis and other administration duties for multiple, highly integrated systems. Collaborates with departmental, campus and external IT professionals. Participates in project teams in deployment of custom and vendor applications. Utilizes excellent interpersonal and communication skills to document and share information with team members in a clear and concise manner.

Student Team Supervision:

  • Directly and indirectly supervises a student team in collaboration with the Student Leadership Coordinator and the student leads. Participates in the cycle of recruitment, hiring and training. Shares responsibility for developing and sustaining a strong student leadership program. Oversees the activities of the Endpoint Engineering student team, which is tasked with configuration and imaging of a limited number of special purpose endpoints such as eSports computers, kiosk computers and mobile devices.

User Access Management:

  • Maintains and supports Active Directory environment for Division of Student Affairs. Manages account access and user groups for Division of Student Affairs. Performs frequent user account/group account review. Triages and responds to all ServiceNow tickets for account access granting and removal. Assists department staff with file server access problems. Proposes and implements enhancements that will improve the performance and reliability of the system.

Networking and Security:

  • Applies solid understanding of network protocols and networking fundamentals to analyze, diagnose, and resolve system connectivity and functionality problems. Creates, maintains and reviews firewall rules. Executes security controls to safeguard data, privacy and IT resources. Administers security policies to control access to systems. Analyzes server logs and other data to identify and resolve issues and isolate attempted efforts to compromise security. Maintains a positive relationship with other departments and personnel that will assist in the development, funding, promotion, and/or public relations of the Division of Student Affairs and SAIT. Supports the success and objectives of SAIT. Adheres to University and departmental policies, procedures, and professional practices as well as city, state, and federal laws. Adheres to UC Berkeley's Data Classification Standard, Minimum Security Standards for Networked Devices and Minimum-Security Standards for Electronic Information.

On-Call Rotation:

  • Provides routine and emergency 24x7 production support as part of an on-call rotation. May work nights and weekends as needed to resolve issues, implement changes, and conduct necessary maintenance. Performs root cause analysis and helps with the problem management process for incidents. Completes other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated intermediate knowledge, skills and abilities in IT/Systems Administration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities to troubleshoot and resolve moderately complex technical problems using established parameters, creativity and independent judgment, escalating as necessary.
  • Ability to understand business needs and apply technology solutions to meet those needs.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to learn new technical skills/services quickly through self-directed research, demonstrate problem solving skills and meet deadlines.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Experience managing Microsoft Windows server operating systems in a virtualized environment
  • Experience managing Active Directory and Group Policies in an enterprise environment.
  • Experience with scripting languages (PowerShell preferred).
  • Knowledge of Information Security best practices.
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner across the organization and at varying levels, both technical and non-technical.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Mobile Device Management technologies (Meraki Systems Manager or JAMF).
  • Experience with desktop system imaging and configuration tools, and best practices.
  • Experience with Windows Deployment Services.
  • Experience with IBM BigFix.
  • Working knowledge of database systems (Microsoft SQL or Oracle SQL).
  • Knowledge of campus and department processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of other areas of IT.
  • ITIL V3 Foundations training and certification.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $90,000.00 - $110,000.00.

  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This is a hybrid position, eligible for up to 60% remote capability.
