Educational Infrastructure Systems (EIS), a division of IT Services, provides technology services, support, and resources to the UC San Diego academic community, facilitating teaching and learning in service of the University's educational mission. Our efforts are grounded in a commitment to quality, collaboration, customer focus, innovation, and the importance of providing inclusive, accessible, and safe physical and virtual spaces which enhance the educational experience for our diverse campus community.

As a member of the fast-paced Educational Infrastructure Systems team, you will support a large and complex suite of instructional computing resources comprised of more than 2,000 workstations across 150 instructional computer labs, a wide variety of core and specialty application software packages, physical and virtual backend servers, data storage, traditional/3D printing technology, and other related services for over 42,000 users. This position's primary focus will be on administering Windows 10 and 11 operating systems on enterprise grade computer systems in physical and virtual computer labs supporting the ITS instructional technology mission, so a strong background in administering such systems is required.

Using industry standard and internally developed tools, you will implement best-practice deployment of system images, configuration settings, and software packages. You will act as a support resource for our users by responding to problems reported through the Service Desk and by providing technical details to be used in the development of internal documentation and/or educational material to simplify access to and use of instructional systems. Our team of skilled IT professionals strives to maintain a high level of service and maximize system availability. However, in the event of unforeseen service outages you will also provide corrective action, ensure business continuity, and plan/implement system changes or enhancements to improve overall reliability, security, and performance.

Responsibilities:

* Windows operating system deployment, configuration, maintenance, and security on physical computer lab workstations and in virtualized/cloud environments supporting remote instruction.

* Application software installation, configuration, patch maintenance, and performance tuning.

* Implementation and monitoring of security controls in compliance with campus network security policy to prevent unauthorized access and ensure data protection/integrity.

* Configuration of systems and services to use enterprise identity and access management facilities. Identification and resolution of errors involving systems and services access.

* Consultation with customers to understand educational requirements and devise innovative technological solutions to meet those needs.

* User support through trouble-ticket resolution and the creation/curation of technical documentation.

* Additional responsibilities reasonably related to business duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

  • Proven knowledge of and experience with enterprise level installation, configuration, and ongoing system administration, maintenance, and configuration management of desktop and server operating systems including Windows 10/11 and Windows Server 2016/2019/2022 in a medium to large enterprise environment.

  • Experience using the industry standard Microsoft MECM (or similar device management system) to configure and manage Windows desktop systems, especially in an educational or business enterprise environment.

  • Proven knowledge of computer security best practices and policies, with experience securing desktop/server-based software and ensuring privacy of user data.

  • Well versed in IT best practice procedures and tools for business continuity, availability and performance monitoring, patching, and debugging/problem resolution.

  • Familiarity with virtualization platforms (such as Parallels, Virtual Box, VMware vSphere, containers/zones, etc.) and remote access protocols (such as RDP, SSH, VNC, etc.).

  • General knowledge of other areas of IT including computer internal architecture and design, peripheral devices (disks, printers, input, and display devices), hardware architecture, communication protocols and mechanisms, device drivers, and networking components (such as hubs, switches, and routers).

  • Ability to write and edit scripts of moderate complexity used to automate system maintenance and administration tasks. Demonstrated skill in at least one high-level programming/scripting language such as Batch, C++, JavaScript, Perl, PowerShell, Python, or Visual Basic.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of troubleshooting techniques relevant to desktop system support.

  • Experience with cross-platform network communications (TCP/IP, IPV6 routing protocols) and general knowledge of how different applications and protocols interact on network aware devices using the OSI model. Demonstrated understanding of and experience with protocols such as HTTP/HTTPS/SSL and tools such as ssh/scp/sftp.

  • Understanding of relational database design and theory and experience with one or more database server products such as Microsoft SQL, MySQL, Postgres, DB2, or Ingres.
