Pay Range

$118,290 - $182,388 Annually
$118,290 - $151,932 Annually for the TSS.2 level
$142,050 - $182,388 Annually for the TSS.3 level

We have an opening for an External Dosimetry Health Physicist. In this role, you will provide technical consultation and quality control for the in-house processing of whole body, extremity, and track etch neutron dosimeters, interpreting results, implementing corrective actions and process improvement, and developing technical bases for various characteristics of the dosimetry systems. This position is in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate and reports to the Analytical Services & Instrumentation Manager.

This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

• Provide technical consultation and quality control for the in-house processing of whole body, extremity, and track etch neutron dosimeters, interpreting results, implementing corrective actions, and developing technical bases for various characteristics of the dosimetric systems.
• Conduct investigations of unexpected doses, working with operational health physicists to resolve them.
• Support the radiation protection organization as a technical resource on tasks and projects involving dosimetry.
• Support the group in its triennial accreditation process with the Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program, including annual internal assessments.
• Support research and development efforts towards the advancement of dosimetry.
• Identify, evaluate, and implement opportunities for improvement.Implement solutions to complex issues/problems.
• Provide dosimetric response to radiological emergencies and incidents on site, participate in the investigation of incidents or accidents involving radiation.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.3 level

• Provide solutions to complex dosimetric issues/problems where ambiguity exists around techniques and approaches. Solutions require in-depth analysis of multiple tangible and intangible factors. Solution path is typically not known ahead of time. Use independent judgment to accomplish objectives.
• Act as the primary dosimetric monitoring expert and routinely interact with professional colleagues, internal senior management, and sponsor organizations across and outside the Laboratory on advanced dosimetric technical and business areas and projects/programs.
• Apply innovative methods to streamline processes and advance dosimetric measurements at the laboratory.

• Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiation Physics, or Radiation Protection or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
• Experience in operational health physics or a laboratory engaged in the monitoring of personnel and work environments, or a related field with knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations and other consensus standards.
• Experience with preparing technical reports or participating in and/or conducting radiation safety audits and inspections.
• Organizational skills with attention to detail necessary to handle multiple tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level customer service and good follow through.
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment with a broad cross-section of people and organizations, managing projects, and meeting schedules.
• Decision-making and problem-solving skills, and verbal and written communication skills necessary to solve complex problems, collaborate effectively in a team environment.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.3 level

• Experience in a laboratory engaged in the monitoring of personnel and work environments, or a related field with advanced knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations and other consensus standards, and/or dosimetry research and development.
• Advanced experience with electromechanical systems and/or preparing technical reports; participating in and/or conducting radiation safety audits and inspections.
• Significant experience leading independent health physics or dosimetric work, reviewing new health and safety standards, and providing technical direction and/or leadership to health and safety staff on health physics and/or dosimetric-related matters.

Qualifications We Desire

• Master's or higher degree in Health Physics, or another closely-related technical area.
• Certification by the American Board of Health Physics.
• DOELAP/NVLAP Experience.
