DESCRIPTION

The Department of Ophthalmology comprises 30 faculty physicians and scientists, twelve resident physicians, 13 (including clinical and research) post-doctoral physicians and scientists, and over 150 staff with six divisions - Glaucoma, Retina, Cornea & Refractive Surgery, Pediatrics, Oculoplastics, and Neuro-ophthalmology. In addition, clinical services are provided at the Shiley Eye Center, Ratner Eye Center, UCSD Health Sciences (UCSDHS), Hillcrest ambulatory center, and the Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital. The Department of Ophthalmology has the largest single outpatient clinic at the University of California, San Diego, with over 110,000 visits annually. Additionally, over 5400 surgical cases are performed.

The Department of Ophthalmology is rapidly growing and looking to expand its practice at the Shiley Eye Center and in regional satellites, including the possible acquisition of existing practices.

This position interprets policies, disseminates, and implements policy guidelines. Develops and implements work standards and ensures process improvement methods meet operational needs. Develops methods and protocols to ensure cash handling, patient services, patient registration, scheduling and patient administration are in compliance with policies set forth by the University, Health Sciences and other governing entities. Manages the resolution of clinic operations and patient administration issues by ensuring clinic administrative staff are trained and updated on policy guidelines. Works with Facilities to ensure timely resolution of facility condition issues to mitigate and minimize risk issues. Serve on systems committees and provide patient services analysis reporting in preparation for future enhancements. Works with Call Center Supervisor and Medical Records Supervisor on training and administrative issues. Incumbent is a member of the clinic leadership team as led by the Director.

Supervises clinic operations staff involved in routine functions. Oversight of administrative areas such as registration, new patient coordination, scheduling, medical records storage and maintenance, facilities, insurance authorizations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor's degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training.

  • Skills to supervise support staff in clinic / center administration, and to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Knowledge of practice operations, patient-scheduling systems, medical and insurance terminology, applicable information systems, patient service standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Basic knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources issues and performance, and to provide input to decision-making on human resources matters.

  • Detail oriented, with the ability to apply analytical and critical thinking skills to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and apply effective solutions.

  • Solid interpersonal skills for effective information exchange and problem solving with all levels of management and staff, consultants, and outside agencies.

  • Skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey complex administrative, clinical, and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to produce a variety of reports and analyses.

  • Knowledge of business software and specialized applications and data management systems used in clinic / center operations.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of professionalism in a rapidly changing, fast paced environment with the need to quickly make independent judgements as the need arises.

  • Excellent organizational skills to rapidly prioritize activities and delegate work in a high volume ambulatory clinic.

  • Willingness to be flexible and adapt to the needs of the clinic on a daily basis.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $67,200 - $119,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.18 - $57.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
